| Carla Rees Artist's Website >> Carla Rees (Artistic Director/alto flute) completed her BMus and MMus degrees at the Royal College of Music, studying flute, alto flute and composition under Graham Mayger, Simon Channing and Timothy Salter. Since graduating, she has become a leading alto flute specialist, working to raise the profile of the instrument through research, performance and commissioning new repertoire. Carla plays a quarter tone Kingma system alto flute, an instrument with which she is able to break new ground in contemporary techniques and repertoire. She works frequently in collaboration with composers of all genres and works as a solo recitalist as a member of her group, rarescale, throughout the UK and abroad. She has commissioned over 50 new works for alto flute, and in 2004 organised an international competition for composers in conjunction with rarescale and the Royal College of Music in London. She is a member of contemporary music groups Contemporary Consort and illegal harmony, and has recorded for the Capstone, Tetractys and Metier labels, in addition to soundtracks for short films shown on British and International television. Carla teaches the flute at Wycombe Abbey School, and at Nottingham University, and has had her own compositions performed throughout the UK. She was a Junior Fellow at the Royal College of Music from 2002-2004. She has performed flute concertos regularly since 1990, including a tour of Denmark playing the Nielsen Concerto, which was recorded and broadcast by the BBC. She has given masterclasses and workshops for flute players and composers at several leading institutions, including the Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, UCLA, University of Southern California, University of California, California Institute of the Arts, Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music and Trinity College of Music. Alongside frequent performances with rarescale, recent engagements in 2007 include performances in Michael Oliva’s opera, The Girl Who Liked to be Thrown Around, and recitals in Birmingham, Leeds, Sheffield and London. Performances in 2006 included recitals at the British Flute Society’s International Convention in Manchester, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival and at the Petworth Festival. Carla also works as a freelance photographer, and has had her work published in the UK, USA, New Zealand and France. O1C Performances: rarescale |
