Selim Koytak

Selim Koytak was born in Istanbul, Turkey. He began studying oud, music theory and Turkish repertoire with Nuri Senneyli and Necdet Gerginok. As his talent soared, he got to study advanced oud techniques with world-famous oudist Necati Celik. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in architecture, he attended the Master of Turkish Music Program at the Istanbul Technical University State Conservatory, where he studied with another world-famous oudist, Mehmet Bitmez. Selim discovered Eastern European music in films by Emir Kusturica, such as "Black Cat White Cat" and was instantly enamored. He has performed both Turkish and Balkan music in Turkey, with various musicians (including the Gypsy clarinetist, Selim Sesler). In Danubius, Selim also plays the Romanian folk lute, called cobza, and the dumbek (hand drum).
