This December, Voci Women’s Vocal Ensemble, conducted by Jude Navari, presents Voices in Peace VIII: Fire in the Air, a musical meditation on three powerful seasonal themes of fire, angels, and peace. Drawing from Martha Alter’s kaleidoscopic Peace, which describes peace as an “amorous hymn like fire in the air,” the concert title also suggests angels, stars, a love intense and overpowering, or perhaps an apocalyptic vision of war. The themes of angels and fire inspire the concerts two large-scale works: To the Angel with Fiery Hands, contemporary Swedish composer Karin Rehnqvist’s breathtaking work for oboe and women’s choir, and Daniel Pinkham’s Angels are Everywhere, a catalogue of angels, at turns terrifying (The Angel of the Fiery Furnace) and whimsical (The Angels on the Head of a Pin.) HÃ¥kan Olssen’s Da pacem Domine and Arvo Pärt’s Peace upon you, Jerusalem offer quietly moving pleas for peace to our war-swept and troubled world. In this time of continued global uncertainty and unrest, Voci offers this eighth annual Voices in Peace concert to inspire us on the path to peace and harmony in the spirit of the holiday season.
