James Tinsley has performed with the Boston Symphony, the Boston Pops, and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, he played principal trmpet with the Boston Opera Company, the Handel and Haydn Society of Boston, the Portland Symphony (Portland, Maine), the Caracas Philharmonic (Venezuela), and the Toronto Pops. He was educated at the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Roger Voisin and André Come; The Curtis Institute of Music with Gilbert Johnson; Philadelphia Musical Academy with Samuel Krauss. He was a Leonard Bernstein Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Festival and a performer at the Marlboro Music Festival.
He made his solo debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra as a winner of the Philadelphia Concerto Competition and has performed as a soloist with the Boston Pops, the Atlanta Chamber Orchestra, the Vermont Mozart Festival, and the Estonian Stte Symphony Orchestra.
As a chamber musician, he has been a member of the Empire Brass Quintet, the New Brass Ensemble, ans is currently a member of the Niagara Brass (Toronto). He has performed recitals for National Public Radio's Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts Series, the Los Angeles County Museum Recital Series, and Music Around Us for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
Mr. Tinsley was awarded a Sterling Brown Visiting Professorship at Williams College (Williamstown, MA). He was on the faculties of Darmouth College, the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto). He has given masterclasses at Rutgers University, Northwestern University, the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, and the Tallinn Conservatory.
In addition to classical music, he has performed with Chick Corea's Return to Forever, and Stanley Clarke's School Days Band. He has produced recordings for Charlie Schlueter (principal trumpet emeritus of the Boston Symphony) and the Niagara Brass.
