Luthier Anthony Lane

Explore the history, dreams and artistry of one of America’s foremost contemporary violin-makers, Anthony Lane. Traditionally trained in Chicago as an apprentice and then in Germany as a journeyman, Lane received the title of Master Violin Maker over 20 years ago in Hamburg and is still the only American-born maker to have done so. Today he combines traditional lutherie techniques with the latest in physical acoustics and design to create instruments for musicians around the world. Lane will talk briefly about how an instrument is built, and you will hear the maker’s instruments played by some of the outstanding musicians who own them:Kay Stern, Concertmaster of the SF Opera Orchestra, Bernard Chevalier, former first violin SF Symphony, Benjamin Simon, former violist New World String Quartet, Laura McLellan, former cellist of the Cincinnati Symphony, Candice Guirao, Principal Second violin of the New Century Chamber Orchestra, Rene Mandel, former Principal Second of the LA Chamber Orchestra, and Patrick Kroboth, former Principal viola of the touring Canadian Opera Company.Programming will include Mozart’s Viola Quintet in C minor.
