B major, D. 575; A minor, D. 784; A major, D. 959A promising but unheralded student at the Curtis Institute in 1993, Meng-Chieh Liu was asked to substitute at the last minute for the celebrated André Watts in recital at Philadelphia’s Academy of Music. The response, noted the Philadelphia Inquirer, was tumultuous: “Before he was off the stage, the Academy audience was on its feet, awarding him a deserved standing ovation … the young pianist dazzled the audience … an artist of great maturity.†Thus began a stellar career that continues tonight with the third of Mr. Liu’s four concerts devoted to Schubert’s sonatas.
