Melody of China – November 24, 2013

Melody of China celebrates twenty years of Chinese music in San Francisco. The Bay Areas premiere Chinese chamber ensemble presents a retrospective of commissions, collaborations and traditional repertoire. In addition to the Melody of China ensemble, the program features erhu virtuoso Jie Bing, pianist/composer Jon Jang, saxophonist/composer Francis Wong, bassist Marcus Shelby and drummer Deszon Claiborne. Featured works include: Gang Situs Double Concerto for Erhu and Yangqin, Francis Wongs Shanghai Stories for Chinese and jazz ensemble, Jon Jang’s Butterfly Lovers, A Moonlit Night on the Spring River, Melody of Chinas Flying China, a medley of traditional pieces showcasing each instrument and much more. The program will include a brief talk with composers and guest artists. This performance is made possible in part through the Musical Grant Program, which is administered by the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music, and supported by the Heller Foundation, the Hewlett Foundation, the San Francisco Foundation and San Francisco Grants for the Arts; sffcm.org.
