In this concert, Karen Clark, Hank Dutt and Marilyn Thompson explore the bounds of space and time in music from the 12th–21st Centuries. The first half of the concert features songs of Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms on poetry of Goethe, Kerner, and Rückert and includes Brahms luscious Zwei Gesänge, Op. 91, for alto, viola, and piano. The second half of the concert merges the modern and medieval sound worlds of Joan Jeanrenaud, Steve Reich, Guillaume de Machaut, and Hildegard von Bingen. The evening concludes with San Francisco composer Robert Sheldons songs on texts of Margaret Widdmore and Sara Teasdale.
