| Emil Miland 'Cellist Emil Miland is acclaimed internationally for his performances of new and traditional repertoire as a soloist and chamber musician. The San Francisco Classical Voice states, “Emil Miland is a unique phenomenon. There is just something about the way that he connects the qualities of style, grace, virtuosity, and real soul that remind one of no other 'cellist.” He made his solo debut at 16 with the San Francisco Symphony, the same year he was selected to perform for Mstislav Rostropovich in master classes held at the University of California, Berkeley. He is a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, and has received grants from Chamber Music America and the National Endowment for the Arts. A champion of new works, Miland has given the premiere of compositions written specifically for him by such composers as: Ernst Bacon, David Carlson, Andrew Imbrie, Lou Harrison, Jake Heggie, Richard Hervig, and Tobias Tenenbaum. He has recorded Carlson’s 'Cello Concerto No. 1 with the Utah Symphony (New World Records) and also appears on the RCA Red Seal recording, The Faces of Love: The Songs of Jake Heggie, performing with Frederica von Stade, Sylvia McNair, and Zheng Cao. He is featured on Heggie's Flesh and Stone a new recording benefiting Classical Action: Performing Arts Against AIDS, and also plays on his upcoming recording entitled, Passing By. Mr Heggie also wrote his Holy The Firm Essay for 'Cello and Orchestra for Miland which he premiered and recorded with Michael Morgan and the Oakland East Bay Symphony. He has been a member of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra since 1988 and was recently featured playing continuo in their production of Don Giovanni in June 2007. He has often collaborated with singers in recital including Joyce Castle, Susan Graham, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, and Frederica von Stade. In March 2008 he was featured in San Francisco Performance’s Pauline Viardot & Friends with Marilyn Horne and Ms. Von Stade. Upcoming projects include recording David Carlson’s Sonata for 'Cello and Piano, with Kevin Fitz-Gerald, a work that was written for him in 1992.
