Art Dougherty

Art Dougherty had his early music training in the private music studios of New York City, continuing his studies at New York University where he received Bachelor and Master degrees in Music Education. Before moving to California, he taught instrumental music at Westbury, New York and New Canaan, Connecticut.

As a performer on saxophone, clarinet, and flute, Art Dougherty has worked the clubs, ballrooms, hotels, convention centers and concert halls in New York and in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has also played with bands and orchestras in the major showrooms at Reno and lake Tahoe. With many years of experience, Art has performed with outstanding headliner entertainers including Sammy Davis, Jr., Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Tormé, Joe Williams, Nancy Wilson, Natalie Cole and Rita Moreno. In his early career, Art played engagements with big bands led by Skitch Henderson, Les and Larry Elgard, and others. Currently, he is the lead alto saxophone with the Rudy Salvini Band and also plays with the Salvini Octet.

The Studio 6 Big Band of San Francisco was organized in the year 2000, under the direction of Art Dougherty, primarily to promote the concert jazz library of composer-arranger Don Piestrup. Since that initial start, much additional material has been added to the repertoire representing the best of the contemporary jazz writers. Recent performances at Wente Vineyards in Livermore and at Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society in Half Moon Bay were received with enthusiasm by sold-out audiences.

Art Dougherty has had two separate but compatible careers as an educator and a musician. His work in education includes twenty-four years as a teacher and administrator in the san Ramon Valley Unified School District. He has taught on a part time basis at Diablo Valley College, Chabot College, and Sonoma State University. Now in his retirement as an educator, Art can devote more of his time and energy to music performance.
