Sujeeva Hapugalle
 
Sujeeva Hapugalle, a Steinway Artist having recently relocated to the Bay Area from London, has been highly acclaimed for her versatile presentations of wide ranging repertoire, rare artistry, pianism and communication in performance, earning a special affinity with her audiences around the world. Her work as solo recitalist, concerto artist and lecture recitalist has taken her to Europe, North America, South America, the Middle East, Japan, Hong Kong and Sri Lanka—often combined with Master Classes. Her stylistic repertoire embraces Classical, Romantic and Impressionistic music to virtuoso piano transcriptions.

Sujeeva began her musical studies in Sri Lanka with her mother at an early age and continued her studies with Mary Billimoria. She then went on to study at the Royal College of Music, London after winning the sole scholarship awarded by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music to the South East Asian region of Hong Kong, India and Sri Lanka. Her professor of piano at the RCM was David Parkhouse. She continued her Postgraduate Studies with further scholarships from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, the Royal College of Musi-Napper Award and the President’s Award–Sri Lanka. She was a major prizewinner at the Royal College of Music and has also been the recipient of several awards at National and International Competitions in the UK.

Sujeeva has broadcast on Classic FM (UK) and BBC Television. Piano concertos performed include Tchaikovsky’s first, Rachmaninov’s second, Beethoven’s fifth, Grieg’s, Saint-Saëns’ second and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. She has performed extensively as solo recitalist, chamber musician and collaborator at many prestigious venues throughout the UK. Amongst other festivals, she has been a frequent solo concert artist for the Chopin Society and the Beethoven Piano Society of Europe in their concert series in London at St. Martin in the Fields.

Sujeeva receives regular invitations to present Master Classes and lectures on concert tours under the auspicious of the British Council and the European Piano Teacher’s Association.

She has been a keen supporter and performing artist for several charities and was a select artist for Sir Yehudi Menuhin’s Live Music Now series in the UK. She is also a popular guest solo concert artist for the two leading six star luxury cruise lines, Crystal and Radisson Seven Seas.

Her discography includes a recording at St John’s Smith Square, London of a selection of compositions by Chopin. Her most recent recording, released in 2002, includes works by Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, Liszt, Albéniz and Saint-Saëns/Godowsky.
